Google Ads Match Types
Google Ads Match Types
A tool for working with Google Ads match types
The tool converts keywords into any of the three Google AdWords match types: broad match, phrase match, and exact match.
What are Google Ads match types and what is this tool for
Match types in Google Ads determine which search queries can trigger your ads. The same keyword can be used in different match types to control reach, targeting accuracy, and campaign spend.
This tool helps you quickly convert a list of keywords into the required Google Ads match type formats. Just paste your keywords, select the needed match types, and the tool will automatically generate a ready-to-copy list.
How to use the tool
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Paste your list of keywords into the input field. Each keyword should be entered on a new line. |
| 2 | Select one or several match types: broad, phrase, or exact. |
| 3 | The tool will automatically generate the final result in the output field. |
| 4 | Copy the generated list and use it when setting up your Google Ads campaign. |
Main match types
| Match type | How it looks | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Broad match | buy bicycle |
Your ad can appear for a wide range of searches related to the meaning of the keyword. This is the broadest reach option. |
| Phrase match | "buy bicycle" |
Your ad can appear for searches that include the meaning of your keyword phrase. The wording and intent should stay close to the original phrase. |
| Exact match | [buy bicycle] |
Your ad can appear for searches that are very close to the exact keyword or phrase. This is the most precise match type. |
How the tool builds the result
The tool does not change the keywords themselves. It only applies the correct formatting depending on the selected match type:
| Selected type | What the tool adds |
|---|---|
| Broad match | The keyword stays unchanged. |
| Phrase match | The tool adds quotation marks around the keyword phrase. |
| Exact match | The tool adds square brackets around the keyword phrase. |
Example of how the tool works
If you enter the keyword:
buy bicycle
and select all three match types, the result will be:
buy bicycle
"buy bicycle"
[buy bicycle]
When this tool is useful
| Situation | Why use the tool |
|---|---|
| Quick keyword structure building | Helps you prepare the same list of keywords in several match types within seconds. |
| Bulk keyword formatting | Useful when you need to process dozens or hundreds of keyword phrases without manual formatting. |
| Preparing for Google Ads Editor import | Gives you a ready-made list that can be copied and used in your campaigns right away. |
| Testing different launch strategies | Helps compare how the same semantic core performs in broad, phrase, and exact match. |
Important to remember
The selected match type affects reach, traffic relevance, and campaign costs. Broad match gives you the widest reach but may bring less precise queries. Phrase match gives you more control. Exact match is best when maximum precision is important.
Before launching a campaign, it is worth checking your keyword list, negative keywords, and account structure to avoid duplication and irrelevant traffic.
